The Best News Photo in Egypt For Year 2009

The best news photo in Egypt for year 2009 is the photo that was censored last year , the photo of Sheikh Al Azhar pulling off the Niqab of a little girl.

The snap shot was taken by Alaa Mohamed who works in any official newspaper. By the way the girl’s face was blurred to protect her privacy. After pulling her Niqab off her face his holiness told the little girl that she was not that pretty to hide her face !!!!!!
This photo was chosen the best news photo in Egypt for year 2009 in the annual professional photography contest held at the Sakkia. I know that this photo was there yet I could not find any highlight about it especially that it was not published as far as I could remember last year.
Despite I agree that a girl in this age should not wear the Niqab yet I disagree 100% on how the Sheikh of Al Azhar Tantawy had handled the matter totally. He could have persuaded the young girl with his point of view respectfully earning her trust and our respect but unfortunately his violent action and rude comment made him lose his cause.
Alaa Mohamed captured a golden moment and honestly since knowing about it , I believed that this is the real news photo of the year.

  2. Something that is not related to religion, but is associated with it - which results in a bad thing - should not be acceptable.

His behaviour is harsh, but understandable.

  3. You just wrote what I wanted to say Zeinab. Excellent shot and comment. I think its time for sheikh Al-Azhar to go. I feel sorry for this girl and her family. He is sending a message to every muslim woman wearing a niqab "Keep wearing it because moderate muslims are against you and hate you".

  4. @Medsha: I hope when someone tries to undress something you are wearing bec he/she thinks its not proper etc, you will have the same opinion. Not to mention doing the same with a "kid" with all the implications of such pressure and violence on a kid
